Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level names remained running.
